Tico Noe Mar McGonagle is on a roll, literally catching the roll of the surf. The young Tico from Pavones is currently the dominating force to contend with at the Dakine World Junior Surfing Championship being held in Panama.

The event’s website http://dakineisawjsc.com/ provides viewers with updates on the daily heats for those who are not able to see the action in person. Yesterday’s heats were eventful to say the least and despite so fantastic performances, some surfers were eliminated. For Costa Rica’s McGonagle, the pressure seemed to have brought out the best in the young surfer.

Costa Rica Surfers Still On Top Despite Eliminations

The event, which began on April 14th has seen the pack of surfers dwindle from 300 to a mere 100, with many eliminations. For Costa Rica however, despite the loss of some of the best upcoming surfers, McGonagle and Manuel Mesen are still in medal contention. With the elimination of the National Team, Costa Rica is betting on success from the two Ticos who have survived the event to this point.

For Noe Mar McGonagle, the event has shown that this Tico surfer is unstoppable. With scoring to date placing him in the top ten in the under 16 category, McGonagle has a chance to come out on top in Panama. If his performance continues to be as spectacular as in previous heats, bring him to the top of the leader board, this Tico can take it all.

The event has not been filled with glory for the Tica contingent of surfers. The young females were disqualified after two sudden death eliminations. Included in that elimination was McGonagle’s sister, Leilani who surfs for the Roxy Team.

The high-tides during the event have resulted in a fantastic competition. With 4-6 foot sets, the conditions of long walls were the canvas for many surfers to strut their stuff. Being in the right zone during such almost perfect conditions have given the surfers the opportunity to show what they can do. For many,  there have been some last minute heat winning waves.

This year’s event will be special for the team who comes up with the most winning gold medals. A special trophy will be presented to the winning team from the International Olympic Committee in recognition of the accomplishments of the competing surfers. For many this is a great sign that it may be an indication that surfing may be considered for Olympic Competition. Wouldn’t that be fantastic. Although the Costa Rican National Team does not have the chance to bring back the trophy, they don’t mind this time with two Ticos gunning to win the singles title. Go McGonagle Go!!! Costa Rica surfers are living proof of Pura Vida!
