Costa Rica Nery BrenesCosta Rica can hold their heads up high with pride as Costa Rican sprinter Nery Brenes captured a gold medal in the IAAF World Indoor Championships http://istanbul2012wic.org yesterday in Istanbul, Turkey. The surprising win, resulted in a major defeat for Kirani James, the sprinter from Grenada who was expected to win easily.

Setting a world record to boot, Nery Brenes won the championship with a world record time of 45.11 in the men’s 400 meter race. Upsetting the favorite, Brenes was overwhelmed with his victory as he has had some bad luck in the last few meets as he tries to qualify for the London Olympic Games this summer.

Unexpected Win For Nery Brenes

The victory was important for the Costa Rican sprinter. In recent indoor races, Brenes was disqualified, feel and was struggling. Reflecting on his past performances, Brenes’ was not considered to even place. Recovering from the setback caused by a fall at the Birmingham meet earlier in the season, the pressure and focus was definitely not on Brenes.

The Costa Rican ran the race of his career, in addition to passing the current world champion Kirani James from Grenada, the heat resulted in a new world-leading time. Brenes crossed the finish line in 45.11 seconds, with Bahamians Demetrius Pinder and Chris Brown coming in silver and bronze.

As the Olympics near, the sprinters will focus on refining their strategies and techniques in hopes of improving their focus. For many competing in the Olympics, it is mind over matter and in this case, the sprinters who did not perform as well will have to re-evaluate their strategies.
