Qualifying Tournament For Olympics

Costa Rica Women's Beach VolleyballThe Southern Nicoya Peninsula will be a buzz in the upcoming week as volleyballers from around the world descend on the Malpais and Santa Teresa regions to take part in the Beach Volleyball Continental Cup.

As part of the qualifying games for the 2012 Olympic games, Costa Rica will participate with two men’s and two ladies teams, vying for a spot in the games to be held in London, England from July 27, 2012 to August 12, 2012. The qualifying rounds will see teams from Central America, the Caribbean play in matches for four remaining spots which will advance those teams to the next qualifying competition which will be held in Nayarit, Mexico.

The teams which will advance to the Mexico competition will compete against the America grouping which will include teams from Mexico, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The United States who belongs to the World Tour will have its own qualifying matches in their own league.

Costa Rican athletes are actively involved in the qualifying process for this year’s games. Recently although giving it their best, the ladies soccer team came up short against the U.S. powerhouse team. For Costa Rica, it was a chance to play against some of the best players in the world and take a lot of knowledge away from those matches.

For Costa Rica as a country, the opportunity to host the Continental Cup Beach Volleyball tournament is a great way to showcase the Nicoya Peninsula region with its beautiful beaches. With investment from the Beach Volleyball Association, there is the opportunity to host more events in this sport and others where the key is to establish Costa Rica as a sporting event destination.

The competition will see the women’s teams play in Santa Teresa and Malpais from February 10-12, 2012 while the men’s team will compete in Nicaragua. For Costa Rica this is an opportunity to showcase their country and of course their Women’s Beach Volleyball team! Good luck Costa Rica!
