Costa Rican Astronaut Inducted Into Hall of Fame

Costa Rica Franklin Chang AstronautIt was recently announced that Franklin Chang, Costa Rica’s famous astronaut will be inducted into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame, an honor bestow on few.

Mr. Chang was born in Costa Rica to a Chinese father and Hispanic mother, both who were Costa Rica born. The family moved to the United States where Mr. Chang attended the University of Connecticut. Earning a degree in Mechanical engineering, he went on to attend MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy.

As a celebrated astronaut, Mr. Chang was selected as a candidate for NASA in 1980 and six years later, flew on his first mission. Part of six additional missions, tying the record for the most space trips with Jerry L. Ross, another NASA astronaut.

The induction ceremony will take place at the NASA Kennedy Space Center on May 5th, 2012 and will include inductees Kevin Chilton who is the highest-ranking astronaut and Charles Precourt, who is the former chief of the NASA astronaut corps.

Humble Costa Rica Dreams Space

Currently Mr. Chang is president and CEO of Ad Astra Rocket Company, http://www.adastrarocket.com , a company founded by Mr. Chang that focuses on the development of advanced plasma rocket propulsion technology. During his years with NASA, astronaut Chang was part of several significant space missions including the first joint U.S./Russian Space Shuttle mission in which a Russian Cosmonaut was a crew member. during the Discovery mission, Mr. Chang was fortunate to spend for days docked to the MIR Space Station. On his last mission, astronaut Chang was instrumental in installing the mobile base system on the the International Space Station which he replaced the failed wrist joint on the Canadarm II.

As a young Costa Rican who immigrated to the United States Astronaut Chang’s accomplishments in space travel and space development must be recognized by not only NASA but Costa Rica. Clearly a dream to travel to space became a reality for this Costa Rican who saw far behind Pura Vida…. In 2004 George W. Bush was quoted as saying, “ Mankind is drawn to the heavens for the same reason we were once drawn into unknown lands and across the open sea. We choose to explore space because doing so improves our lives, and lifts our national spirit. So let us continue the journey.” and for Astronaut Chang from Costa Rica, space travel did improve his life!
