Chinese New Year Celebrations In Costa Rica

Costa Rica Chinese New YearToday marks the beginning of the Year of the Dragon for the Chinese culture and for those following the calendar, it is a year that will represent change and mobility. The Dragon is a symbol of change from bad to good and for most around the world who are suffering the effects of economic downturn, this is good news.

The dragon is considered to be the most powerful of the 12 signs of the zodiac in Chinese culture. Associated with prosperity and high energy, the dragon is a symbol of power and superior control. It is not an evil symbol but one of good and that is good news for those who are born in the year of the Dragon, including 1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, and 2000.

Dragons possess key characteristics and they including being innovative, enterprising, passionate, quick-tempered, self assured and scrutinizing. Due to the desire to be a Dragon, it is expected that there will be a baby boom in China and other Asian countries who observe the New Year festival. With birth rates on the decline as most Asian cultures including Japan, South Korea choosing quality of life and careers over family, the Year of the Dragon may be the impetus for the birth of children.

Costa Rica Celebrates Chinese New Year

In Costa Rica Chinese New Year will be celebrated with the distribution of over 300 kilograms of Cantonese fried rice. The event, which will take place in front of the La Soledad Church in downtown San Jose is courtesy of the Chinese Embassy. Costa Rica has developed a relationship with China and has been the beneficiary of Chinese investment, including the building of the National Stadium.

As in many countries, Chinese restaurants will also participate in the festivities and provide patrons with special dishes and of course the traditional drum and cymbal dance by the Dragon himself. The Dragon will make his rounds amongst the crowds, providing blessings for the year to come. Kung Hei Fat Choy Costa Rica!
