Where is Santa Claus?

Baby Jesus Brings Gifts

Costa Rica Santa ClausIn many Spanish speaking countries whose religious roots are found in Catholicism, Costa Rican children are taught that gift giving is attributed to Baby Jesus or el Nino Jesus. In many countries around the world, that job is for Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, Father Christmas or Pere Noel. Regardless of his title, this guy is great as he is the bearer of great things…. presents for everyone!

The North American version of Santa Claus has its origins from the Dutch version called Sinterklaas or Sint Nikolaas. The Dutch who settled in New York brought this tradition to the United States. The North American version of Santa Claus has some strange traditions and they include: a funky outfit of red and white; travel by flying reindeer; lives in the North pole; and despite his large size, seems to think that climbing down the chimney of homes is an efficient way of delivering gifts!

Who Is This Guy Anyway?

The concept of today’s version of Santa can be traced back to a poem written in 1823 by Clement C. Moore.  ”Twas The Night Before Christmas” was written by this poet for his children and then later published for the masses. Thomas Nast, an artist created the first image of what Santa would look like, based on the poems descriptions. The poem and the graphics of Santa have become legend, and although he is now a bit commercial he is still lovable and a symbol of good things coming.

With technology you can now track Santa’s travels as he makes his way around the world delivering gifts to the derserving.
