Rock It In Costa Rica

Can You Conquer The Boulder?

Costa Rica National Climbing ChampionshipThis weekend, the Costa Rican Federation of Mountain Sports will hold its National Climbing Championship at the newly built National Stadium in San Jose. If you think that rock climbing is easy, think again. The participants in this event are serious rock aficionados and require skill and planning to scale and conquer the boulder course!

The course combines the climbers physical capabilities along with their skill and agility to maneuver the placement of the boulders. Although the courses are short, not like scaling the side of a real mountain, the climbers are challenged and will not have the assistance of ropes. Saturday’s heats will pin climbers against each other competing for the Sunday climb-offs. Each climber will have five minutes to attempt to climb six routes as many times as they want on Saturday. The advancing climbers will face a series of 4 harder and more challenging courses on Sunday, the final day of competition.

Rock Climb Not A Walk In The Park

Rock climbing is physcially and mentally demanding. Climbers combine physical strength and endurance as well a balance and agility. Mental control is key to climbing and without planning it can be dangerous. Although the competition is indoors, the challenge to complete the courses still involves the same skill level as though it were being held on a mountainside.

With a variety of climbing available, the indoor competition will pin man against boulder. Spectators are invited to watch for free with the cost for competitors being $20.00. The event now held at the National Stadium hopes to bring climbing to the forefront, not only for the competition aspect but in hopes to spur the curiousity of onlookers to train climbing on a recreational basis.  Perhaps with gaining popularity, this activity will gain momentum for visitors who want to experience climbing on their next vacation to Costa Rica!
