Nothing More Romantic Than A Waterfall?

For one of those one of a kind romantic spots that cannot be missed on a trip to Costa Rica, visiting one of several spectacular waterfalls located in Costa Rica should definitely be on the romance to do list.

The La Paz (Peace is Spanish) Waterfall is located in Central Costa Rica, approximately 31km north of Alajuela, approximately an hour outside of San Jose , alongside of the road that continues to the northern plains of Costa Rica. The spectacular waterfall is formed by the River La Paz, which criss cross through the volcanic terrain of the Poas Volcano.

With its mission statement to “preserve and protect the natural environment” this attraction has provided visitors with an unforgettable opportunity to see the bio-diversity of Costa Rica in its unspoiled splendor. Comprised of over 70 acres, the cloud and rainforest is protected under Private Wildlife Refuge Status. The park started its construction  in 1998, opened its doors to visitors in 2000.

Rich in biodiversity, with an altitude of 4,000 to 5,000 ft, the conditions allow for a unique occurrence , the co-existence of cloud forests with rainforests. Walking through the area is clearly magical, with one of the largest butterfly observatories and not to mention 5 striking waterfalls. As the largest butterfly conservatory in the world, this is a must see. The football field sized enclosure allows visitors to walk through as the butterflies live in their natural environment, soaring freely.

Amongst the lush rainforest there are 3kms of paved trails to follow that wrap around these waterfalls. You can view the waterfalls from all angles, and getting wet is part of this unbelievable experience. The trails will take you through the hummingbird gardens, showcasing over 24 different species of this vibrantly colored bird. With feeders throughout  the venue, you will have the opportunity to witness this little creatures feeding and character habits.

The area also boasts an Orchid garden which leads visitors to the Frog Pond home to grean leaf and poison dart frogs. And what would not be complete without a Serpentarium, home to over 30 different species of snake (that could dampen the romance a bit). The park also includes a restaurant and trout pond where you can catch your dinner.


If this isn’t enough on the romantic level then a night or two at the Peace Lodge should do the trick. The ultra upscale accommodations are sophisticated featuring jacuzzi tubs, fireplaces for chilly nights, showers that transform to waterfalls with a turn of a knob and views of the La Paz River valley.
