Costa Rica New Market For Wine Suppliers

Everyone Loves the Vino!

Costa Rica Wine ExpoDuring the recent ExpoVino 2011 held at the Intercontinental in Escazu, Costa Rica, many visitors reminisce about the lack of availability of wine in Costa Rica, but that is quickly changing as the the demand for better and varied wine products increases.

The expo which was held at the end of October, showcased products from over 200 wineries. Exhibitors showcased a variety of wines, including ice wines, Malbecs and Terriors to highlight a few. With over ten different countries represented, including first time exhibitors, Israel, the event is attracting more and more visitors and participants and has experienced steady growth over the years.

The expo provides exhibitors with the opportunity to showcase their products to visitors who would otherwise only be able to taste their products in some restaurants. Visitors to the exhibition were able to compare products and price points and educate themselves instead of buying the same old thing.

For Costa Ricans who have only recently developed a taste for wine, Chile and Argentina have been the largest suppliers of the tasty liquid. As Costa Ricans become more educated in wine, the wine supplier community hopes to capture this a part of this growing market.

Wine Aficionados In Costa Rica

One of the most popular wines currently consumed by Costa Ricans is Two Oceans, a South African wine that is available at a reasonable price point. As the market opens up to different suppliers, price point is key to the success of importers. While there is a growing wine connoisseur community, the average Costa Rican spends about $10 on a bottle of wine, according to Expo exhibitor Distell.

In addition to increasing wine availability in Costa Rica, schools providing sommelier classes are now available. Graduates of the courses are able to find jobs as the demand for sommeliers is growing in Costa Rica and countries such as Guatemala and Honduras.

Israel’s's participation in this year’s expo was a joint venture with the Israeli Embassy in Costa Rica. With exports to the U.S. and Europe, the goal is to expand their products to Costa Rica and the Latin American market.

In addition to wine, the expo would not have been complete without showcasing wine related products including cheeses,  wine courses and even wine flavored ice cream. With more knowledgeable consumers and the demand for wine increasing,  wine in Costa Rica is proving to be a growing marketplace. Uncork a bottle and enjoy the bouquet, the essence and clarity of wine in Costa Rica!
