Escazu Costa Rica, Home Away From Home?

Costa Rican Town Ex-Pat Central

Costa Rica EscazuLocated close to the capital city of San Jose, Costa Rica, approximately 7km from the capital is the suburb known as Escazu, home to expats and gringos, this posh upscale neighborhood is the home away from home for many foreigners, most notably, North Americans who are looking to retire, relocate or have made Costa Rica their new country of residence.

Considered a colonial town, this beautiful suburb is spread out over a hillside, providing spectacular views of San Jose, and Heredia. Composed of three neighborhoods, San Antonio de Escazu, Rafael de Escazu and Escazu Centro, the suburb is easily accessible by all the highways which lead to some of Costa Rica’s popular attractions. Its’ central location to San Jose enables its residents to feel part of a larger community while enjoying the quiet, secure and beauty of the suburban lifestyle.

Escazu is a great alternative to living in San Jose. With many amenities, the ex-pat community is able to live as they would in the suburbs of many major North American cities, but of course with a touch of Tico flavor. There are many great fine dining restaurants, banks, pharmacies and grocery stores. The suburb also boasts an 18-hole golf course and country club. The Multi Plaza, one of the largest and modern shopping malls also finds itself in Escazu. The residential communities are gated and well maintained, providing security to those who are seeking an alternative to the hustle and bustle of living in San Jose.  Most importantly however, is that most of the people in this suburb speak English, making it much easier for those who are re-locating to Costa Rica… it gives “newcomers” a chance to settle in without the stress of having to communicate in Spanish.

Escazu, Cosmopolitan Destination

If you are looking for a bit of that Costa Rica flavor, Escazu Centro has that charm. With its narrow streets and local fare restaurants, including the famous “sodas” (cafes), this section of Escazu is where Spanish is spoken and fare is traditional Costa Rican style. San Rafael de Escazu is primarily residential, with many of its residents working in the nearby embassies of the US and Canada as well a retirees including wealthy Costa Ricans and those from North America.
