This Young Man from Costa Rica Is A  Dancing Star

The lastest episode of Glee http://www.fox.com/glee/ which aired last night featured Costa Rican Harry Shum Jr. finding his voice. It was an opportunity for Mr. Shum’s character, Mike Chang, the football player to show that he can dance and sing as well!

In season 2, this actor had the opportunity to dance but with so many characters looking to be featured in episodes, Harry was placed in parts where he could show his dance moves but never his other talents, including his fantastic voice. But that came to an end in the latest episode, where the “other Asian” was featured in a dance and singing vignette, breaking out of his character’s perceived impression.

The episode of Glee also touches upon Asian stereotypes, beginning with Harry’s character getting an A- grade and dealing with his parents disappointment with the grade. In real life, Harry’s parents were realistic in their expectations of their son, and although he was a good student, life’s strains provided him with realistic goals.

Born in Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, to Chinese parents who relocated to Costa Rica in the 1970′s, Shum moved to San Francisco when he was 6 years old. Having the Costa Rican and Chinese cultures, Shum has the best of both world’s, speaking Spanish and Chinese.
