Costa Rica Braces for Hurricane Irene

Costa Rica Hurricane IreneA Green Alert has been issued for the Pacific and Central Valley regions of Costa Rica has Hurricane Irene pays Costa Rica a visit. In Costa Rica, “Verde” or Green alert is the lowest level of alert but should not be ignored. 

As a Category 3 storm, with 193 km winds , the system is expected to result in heavy rains and wind for Costa Rica. The National Meteorology Institute is forecasting heavy rainfall for the Central and South Pacific regions of Costa Rica. The Caribbean regions will experience showers and wet conditions.

Caution is required in areas that are susceptible to flash flooding and the heavy rains could create mudslides in the mountains of the Central Valley region. With the addition of high winds and heavy rains, visibility on the road may also be limited.

The areas of San Jose and the Central Valley have experienced a variety of rainfall intensities so far and residents who have experienced flooding in the past should pay attention to the surrounding water levels.
