The Vindas Family Rules Costa Rica Surf

With a house advantage, surfing at the Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica, Lisbeth Vindas captured her 9th women’s title at the National Circuit finals but it wasn’t an easy victory as the Costa Rica surf event hosted the best of the best in the surfing community.

As the crowd favorite and with home advantage, the victory was not easy as the event attracted the best of the best of the surfing community, including Jordan Hundley of the United States who was ranked on top going into the competition. But with everything else in life, a sure thing is not always a sure thing and this proved to be the case with Hundley who was eliminated prior to the finals. This left Vindas with a window of opportunity, enabling her to eliminate any others who stood in her way of the championship.

Lisbeth attributed her win to the vibe of the people who were there providing support for the surfer all the way. It is that vibe that Vindas channeled to ultimately win the championship.

In addition Lisabeth’s success, her 26 year old brother Luis Vindas captured his second in a row championship. His victory was determined prior to the finals with 3 wins out of the circuits five. In addition to the success of the Vindas family, the circuit has sprung the next generation of Costa Rica surfers, with 17 year old Anthony Fillingim from Santa Teresa finishing second in the competitive open category and winning the national junior championship. Costa Rica surf competitions are bringing out the best of home grown and international surfers and with another season set to end, Costa Rica can again be proud of the success of their surfing community.
