Justin Johnston of McLouth Kansas and a student of McLouth High School was  tragically shot and killed by a security guard from La Cangreja Lodge in La Fortuna. The incident is being investigated by the Judical Investigation Police (OIJ) in Costa Rica as there are some questions that need to be answered.

It appears from preliminary reports, Justin Johnston and his friends snuck out of their hotel at night and on their way back to their accommodations they passed a property and startled some guard dogs. The barking attracted the security guard on the property who fired a warning shot into the air causing the young men to run. The rest of the details are being investigated, including the un-registered gun which was used to shoot the young man.

The students were on a nine-day Spanish Club trip arranged by EF Educations Tours. Included in the Costa Rica tours were visits to La Fortuna waterfall and Arenal Volcano. – brought to you by CostaRicaCLOSEUP.com

My condolences to Justin’s family and friends. This was a tragedy that never should have happened. My heart breaks at the senselessness of it all.
