You know you are in a surf town when you arrive in Jaco Beach, Costa Rica. With one of the largest stretches of beach in Costa Rica, the main attraction in this part of the country is none other than the Costa Rica surf.

With some of the most friendliest waves, providing great conditions for beginners as well as the skilled surfer, Jaco Beach has always been a draw for surfers. Although the beaches are not as prestine as in other areas such as Tamarindo, rocky with dark grey sand, it is a popular spot for North Americans as well as Europeans who want to escape the cold of their countries and get lost in the fun and surf of Jaco Beach.

Jaco Beach has grown rapidly and without thought some say, creating one of the most touristy regions and beach areas of Costa Rica. Located only two hours away from San Jose, you can actually arrive and be surfing in the same day. The main street during the peak dry season is packed with surfers. The feel of the town is party-like with numerous bars and restaurants, surf shops and  catering to the surfing crowd.


Accomodations in this region are offered in all types of price ranges. In addition to surfing there are many tours and adventure activities offered by different businesses to accomodate those who want to take a break from surfing.

The nightlife is also want attracts surfers to the area as unlike some other regions, Jaco Beach is known for its nightlife. As one of the most bustling surf towns at night, there are bars, discos and restaurants offering nightlife, drink specials, dancing and entertainment. Some of the most well known include La Hacienda, The Jungle and the Beatle Bar.

Unsafe generally for swimmers, Jaco Beach waves are large and riptides are common in this area. The draw for surfers are the breaks. If you want to party at sea, sport fishing in the area is the place to be. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Jaco Beach, Playa Hermosa located about six miles south of Jaco or PLaya Herradura, four miles north of Jaco are becoming top surfing beaches but without the rambuciousness of Jaco Beach, Costa Rica. Regardless of your skill level, Jaco Beach is a great spot to surf or set up base as you surf Costa Rica.
