The Cup of Excellence competition crowning the best Costa Rica coffee was held on Friday in Heredia and the winners have shown that Costa Rica is again leading the coffee industry producing some of the best beans which will be sold on the international market with hopes of achieving a record price.The Cup of Excellence www.cupofexcellence.org is an international competition which selects the best coffee produced in various countries on a yearly basis. There are nine countries who participate in this competition including Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Rwanda. The winning coffees are chosen by a select group of individuals called cuppers who seek out the best available coffee in each of the countries.


Competitions are held in each of the participating countries at least five different times during the competition judging practice. Only the top scoring participants are able to proceed to the next level in the competion. The winning coffee is then sold by an internet auction to the highest bidder.

The winning coffee is of the best quality with pleasant aroma, well developed body and a sweetness that is only indicative of the highest quality of coffee available. Coffee farmers who win the prestigious award are acknowledged at a national ceremony and is recognized as the best grower amongst their peers. In addition, the auction of the beans usually results in a record price for the farmer, funds which in most cases are required by these hard working farmers to continue their success in the coffee growing business.

The competition was held in Heredia, Costa Rica, home of the National Coffee Institute (ICAFE) head office located in San Pedro de Barva, Heredia. The winner of the prestigious honor was La Estrella farm, of Santa Maria de Dota, a mountainous region of Costa Rica, located about an hour from the capital of San Jose.  This region was very successful in this competition, producing eight out of ten of the best coffees in this competition.  - brought to you by CostaRicaCLOSEUP.com

The winner was chosen from fifty five submissions. Costa Rica’s coffee strategy as other coffee producing countries is to increase the prices paid for the best quality available and create a demand market for their product.
