Nosara Surf Team Rising Success of Costa Rica

For years, the talent of Nosara’s surf town in Costa Rica was not recognized as many of the young talent did not compete on the national circuit. That has changed with the establishment of the Nosara Tico Surf School http://www.nosaratico.com by Esteban Lopez and Luigui Montiel, two national level local surfers who decided to make a difference in the surfing experience in Costa Rica.

After years of surf coaching for foreign owned surf schools, these two young men have taken the brave step of finding investors to establish their own school, with the focus being not only to have fun and learn about surfing but also how to be part of the surfing community and what that stands for. Esteban Lopez is trained by the ISA (International Surfing Association). Luigui Montiel is one of the most well known surfers of the Nosara area. As a sponsored surfer, Luigi has competed on the national level. He is also ISA trained which has provided the discipline required to be a dedicated surfing competitor and surf instructor. He is enthusiastic about surfing and his translates into his teaching style and zest for life.

Local Surf Team Represents Nosara Across Costa Rica

The current Nosara Tico Surf Team is made up of 11 local surfers who range in age from 10 to 26 years old. With the dedication of Lopez and Montiel and local parents, the hard work, fundraising and hours of driving to competitions on the Circuito Nacional de Surf,around the country has brought success to this local team. Many have competed in meets depending on the age category as was as specialized competitions such as the Longboard category and have brought home trophies.

Training sessions are held four to five times a month. Maneuvers are practiced then reviewed by video tape for analysis. Training will continue during the National Circuit and then into August. The training breaks from September to October, then the team gets back  into the routine in November before starting the circuit again. The goal of the Nosara Tico Surf School is encourage their students to focus on surfing, discipline, schooling to avoid the temptations of drugs and other distractions of growing up. Many of the current team members have a bright future ahead of them. Christian Santamaria for example is the first surfer from Nosara to be on the National Surf Team. He has recently competed in the Longboard division at the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games in Peru and has gained some national sponsors. This has set the stage for the up and coming surfers. The current standing of the members of the team are impressive and will continue to improve.

The biggest challenge however is funding. Most of the team members rely on local sponsors to pay for their trips. These local businesses are generous to those who cannot afford the expenses associated with surfing include the cost of travel, lodging and meals as well as registration fees for competitions.
