Tarrazu The Best Bean of Costa Rica

Costa Rica Tarrazu Coffee

Tarrazu is considered to be the best of the best of beans and coffee in Costa Rica and possibly the world. Grown in the southern pacific region in the Volcano Poas region at high altitude, this coffee bean is designated as a Single Hard Bean – which is the highest grade in the Costa Rican bean classification system.

The Tarrazu Region of Costa Rica

This region provides for the perfect growing conditions with the rich volcanic soil, the high altitudes and the cool climate resulting in a full-bodied richness with excellent acidity. The Tarrazu Coffee is graded into five grades of quality, ranging from level one being the ultimate bean to level 5, still a high grade but more readily available. Many companies are trying to blend the Tarrazu bean with others to provide a unique blend of coffee as the finest quality of bean is available in small quantities.

The Black Drop http://blackdropcoffeehouse.com in Washington USA recently had the opportunity to feature the “La Pastora” from The Costa Rica SHB Tarrazu and provided this review;

The dry fragrance was predominate of of a musky apricot, sweet earth. Breaking the crust opened up sweet honey notes, strong grassy hay and a light creme brulee. I was ready for the acidity to overwhelm me but found that it was subtle, the “brightness” coming across more as a fermented fruitness. The coffee had a pleasing intensity. As it cooled, I picked up sweeter qualities: dates, dark grape. The finish was excellent, filling the mouth with a smooth spicy aftertaste. Overall, I thought the coffee was complex with strong bottom structure, chocolate, malt, and an rapidly emerging mid-range of honey, dates, almost grape. Highly recommended.

Costa Rica Tours of Coffee Plantations

It is reviews such as the one by Black Drop that are bring Tarrazu coffee to the world stage. Though not as renown as other coffee such a Kona or Jamaica, the quality of Tarrazu is quickly being recognized by coffee connoisseurs. Tarrazu coffee is growing through word of mouth and through coffee aficianados rather than by marketing, making its stage on the world market slow but steady. The Tarrazu coffee region of Costa Rica won’t be kept a secret for much longer.
