Costa Rica Surfing the Nosara Way !

Nosara Costa Rica

Nosara is a laided back Costa Rica surfing area which is ideal for the surfer as well as the nature lover. Getting to Nosara can be difficult as there are no paved roads, so a four wheel drive vehicle is suggested. Once there, the accomodations vary in price range, making this area a return destination for visitors. The landscape of this area is also quite different with roads weaving in and out of lush forested areas, making the beach hard to get to sometimes. But all you have to do is follow the roar of the waves and in no time you will come face to face with some of the best surfing found in Costa Rica. Nosara’s 200 meter beach area gives is home to three different beaches where you can enjoy Costa Rica surfing.

The main beach is Playa Guiones. Six kilometers of white sand extends from Punta Pelada to Punto Guiones to the south. This area is considered one of the best surf areas in Costa Rica. The surf is consistent, has long beach breaks both left and right. In addition, there is a rare and beautiful portion of pink sand, referred to as Playa Rosada at the very south part of Playa Guiones, a great spot for snorkelling or for soaking up some rays. The atmosphere in this area is laid back and relaxed and has a more subdued crowd who enjoy surfing but also enjoy getting away from it all. Accomodations are situated in the forested part of this area, away from the beach.

North of Playa Guiones is another beautiful yet very different beach area. Playa Pelada is home to a natural blow hole surrounded by rocks and if you plan it right, you are bound to get a shower. This area is also home to tidal pools and a cave which is home to a bat colony. As this beach is also protected by an offshore barrier reef, swimming is safe and enjoyable on this beach.

Playa Nosara is the most challenging area for surfing and it is considered to be an experienced surfing area. Swimming is not advisable as the waves in this area are considered as some of the tallest. There are additional activities available in Playa Nosara to enjoy, including horseback riding through the nearby mountains as well as watching the beautiful sunsets, birdwatching or visiting the nearby Ostional Wildlife Refuge. Nosara is the best of all worlds, combining natural beauty with an abundance of wildlife and some of the best world class surfing.

If you want to get away from it all and experience great Costa Rica surfing but don’t want the hussle of Tamarindo, then Nosara is calling. Catch a wave and the rest is up to you.
