Costa Rica is home to some of the best surf in the world. Although there is surfing year round, Costa Rica surfing peaks during different times of the year. The regions of Costa Rica have seasons and those seasons are reflected in the surf locations.  Costa Rica surfing can be quite the experience if planned accordingly.

During the summer months of mid December to April, Costa Rica surfing is at its peak. The temperatures are hot and there is little chance of rain.
Unfortunately this is also the busiest time of the year with the Christmas and Easter breaks, where most Costa Ricans and tourists decide to surf.

The rainy season starts from May to November. The temperature is still hot from May to August with little rain. September is considered to be the
start of the rainy season which continues until November.The crowds are less and prices are lower. If you can weather the rain which usually occurs
in the very early morning or late afternoon, then you can take advantage of the cost savings.

Where and when to surf in Costa Rica is the most important decision to be made. The Northern Pacific Coast is the most consistent are for surfing
during December through to April. The strong offshore winds in this area with ideal swell directions result in breaks in the areas of Playa Negra,
Playa Grande perfect for surfing. The Caribbean coast peaks from November through March, the Central and southern pacific coasts are best from May to November.

Tamarindo is considered the surfing mecca of the northern pacific coast. With easy access to many breaks of various skill levels, this town is
usually used as a base for surfers. There are several breaks in Tamarindo including a challenging break at Langosta. The attraction however in this
area is the central location between Playa Negra and Witches Rock. This area is world famous for its breaks.
